SFC Educates Investors on Commercial Radio 1 "Chit Chat on Facts"

01 Nov 2001

In response to the investors' need for more information about investing, the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) and Commercial Radio 1 will jointly launch a radio segment "Chit Chat on Facts", in the "Crossirade" programme each Friday starting from 2 November 2001 to 8 February 2002.

There will be fifteen 3-minute segments in the series. In each segment, SFC and the host of "Crossirade", Mr Lennon Chan Wing Luk, will talk about current investment-related topics, based on questions from investors. Commercial Radio 1 has begun accepting questions from investors on 22 October 2001. All questions can be sent via fax to Commercial Radio 1 at 2338-0021.

Some of the topics covered will include:

  • New investment products, such as equity-linked notes, guaranteed funds, exchange-traded funds - what investors need to know before deciding whether to invest.
  • Buying and selling securities - how to avoid abuses such as misappropriation and unauthorised transactions, what to watch out for when using discretionary services, and risks of allowing others to trade using one's account.
  • Rights of shareholders - what capital reorganisation, rights issue and privatisation could mean to minority shareholders, and issues to consider in a takeover.
  • Market malpractice - how to handle illegal touting and boiler room operators.

The SFC segment is the first of a series of new programmes that the SFC plans to launch, in response to the results of a recent retail investor survey that the SFC conducted. Investors are encouraged to tune in to Commercial Radio 1 (FM88.1 - 89.5) every Friday at 2.55 p.m. and to provide the SFC (email: investor.info@hksfc.org.hk or telephone 2840-9333) with their views and feedback on this programme.
