SFC Launches New Investor Education TV Drama with RTHK

11 Jun 2004

A new Cantonese television drama series jointly produced by the SFC and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) will begin broadcasting this Sunday to help investors learn more about investing in stocks.

Entitled “All about Stock Investing”, the drama series features nine five-minute episodes which are linked by six characters riding on a public mini-bus. Interviews and relevant news footages are intercut into the drama to help explain the topics. The series covers wide-ranging topics including IPO investing, pooling risk of margin accounts, dealing with market information, corporate governance, shareholders’ rights, custody of stocks and the different kinds of risks investors might face (Note 1).

“All about Stock Investing” is the SFC’s latest initiative to provide investors with more information about investing so that they can invest more wisely. Artiste Ms BoBo Chan, Hong Kong Stockbrokers Association Chairman Mr Henry Chan, commentator Mr Lennon Chan, Hong Kong Society of Financial Analysts President Mr Richard Mak and Professor Raymond So of the Department of Finance of the Chinese University are among those appearing in the programme.

“All about Stock Investing” will be aired on nine consecutive Sundays starting 13 June 2004, at 11 am on ATV Home and 6:20 pm on TVB Jade, and will be repeated at 1:30 am on ATV Home on the following Mondays.  There will be a live webcast of the programme on RTHK's Education Television website at http://SFC.eTVonline.tv and each episode will also be shown on FirstVision of New World First Bus in July.

Launching the drama series at a press conference today, Mr Peter Au-Yang, SFC's Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, said he hoped the drama series could help the investing public understand the issues to consider when investing in stocks.

Mr Au-Yang also took the opportunity to remind investors of the importance of doing their homework before subscribing for an IPO stock. He cautioned that not all IPO shares would close at a price higher than their IPO price on the first day of listing and suggested that investors read the prospectuses which provide useful information and should help them make more informed investment decisions.

The public can provide their views and feedback on the programme to the SFC by calling the Investor Hotline at 2840 9333 or sending an email to investor.info@hksfc.org.hk.

Since 1996, the SFC has jointly produced investor education TV programmes with RTHK. The SFC has also produced video programmes on its own and some of these series are now available under the "Studio" section of the SFC-operated Electronic Investor Resources Centre at www.hkeirc.org.

On-line game

To enhance public interest in the programme, an on-line game has been launched on RTHK’s Education Television website at http://SFC.eTVonline.tv. Each participant in the game will be given a theoretical $ 1 million to invest in 33 Hang Seng Index constituent stocks. The eight participants with the highest-value portfolios at the market close on 16 July 2004 will be the winners. The first three will each receive an SFC corporate watch and the remaining five will each receive a RTHK souvenir.
